A Great Night Out: Diamond Palace then Alton Brown on stage

Dim Sum and Alton Brown

Last night, Foodies Member and fellow Chef/Cook Stacy and I went to see Alton Brown, Downtown San Diego. After all the times we have gone to Diamond Palace during the day for Dim Sum, we thought we would try them out for dinner.

We didn’t know they serve Dim Sum at night!

Well, it’s different at dinner. No rolling carts to pick from … just a few coming out with orders, and then

Diamond Palace

one for dessert. While it was delish, I am going to recommend you do this restaurant with a group (to get a nice variety of choices for less money). The owner, Michael, couldn’t have been nicer. And our waitress, a rock star in this restaurant walked us through the menu and helped us pack up leftovers. She even packed up sauce!

Tell us about Alton Brown ….

After dinner, we headed to the Balboa Theatre. I had not been there before. What a beautiful theatre. And what a BIG LINE that went all the way around the block even with tix. We had pre-paid parking, but too find the parking lot was another 15-20 minutes and then a two block walk to the theatre!

Inside, it was obvious it was worth the trip. Stacy is excited to see the star of Good Eats, Alton Brown. She is just as excited to see this show, as both she and I were to go to Diamond Palace again. And this is supposed to be his Farewell Tour, but I notice there’s a little word below it, that says MAYBE.

Stacy says: “I learned so much about food from Alton Brown”. Stacy is a wealth of knowledge, so I’m thinking now I have to go back and watch those broadcasts!

As for me? Alton Brown is just today’s Bill Nye, the science guy but with food. And I will say this: He did an amazingly witty, funny, engaging show, so creative, pulling up people onstage to participate, which made it all the more funny, because we were picturing what if it was us, on stage! lol

The way he did stage changes with video behind him were pretty creative. In one scene he’s in a kitchen with two windows in two places behind where he is standing and and bird flies in the background of one window and you see it again flying past the second window. And these are more cartoon drawings than pictures. It’s hard to imagine.

Anyway, we had a wonderful night out last night.

While you did not get to join us this time around, there are Special Events posted on San Diego Foodies and Carlsbad Foodies, for this month that you really shouldn’t miss! We’ve got a Sunday Brunch, A Food & Wine Experience, and the Encinitas Fair. Hang with us! We always have a good time!
