One of the things we should all tackle is understanding the plastic issue especially plastic and pregnancy.
WHAT PLASTIC ISSUE, CHEF?
Well, when you buy canned vegetables, the lining is plastic. That plastic has chemicals, like BPA and phthalates.
I DIDN’T REALIZE THAT CHEF!
New Hope has brought to my attention today with a regular newsletter I receive, that we’ve sort of forgotten about these issues. They do a pretty good job of explaining it, so let’s do a ‘from the horses mouth:
Phthalates are chemical plasticizers that have been widely used since the 1950s to soften plastics that would otherwise be brittle and crack when bent. Phthalates are not chemically bound to the plastics they are added to, and for this reason they are continuously released into the air or food or liquid.
Continuously released into the air? Into our food? Into our water and soda? Geez, Louise! Ya mean when I leave a water bottle in the car, and it heats up I’m drinking both water and plastic? And when I use a plastic utensil in the fry pan I’m getting more (gas) than I bargain for ? What other ways is plastic sneaking into my system?
Phthalates are used in personal care products to help lubricate other substances, to help lotion penetrate the skin and to help fragrances last longer. They are also used in toys, electronics, insecticides and many household products.
Toys? You mean the things kids suck on? Tell me more….
BPA is another common chemical found in plastics, food and beverage can linings, thermal receipts and other consumer products.
So what’s wrong with BPA anyway?
BPA is known to mimic estrogen, and studies have linked developmental exposure to BPA to reproductive harm, increased cancer susceptibility and abnormalities in brain development and fat metabolism.
So the EWG is really worried about pregnant women, or women who are exposed just before becoming pregnant. I’m worried about me, cancer and how I metabolize fat. And you? What are you worried about?
