Not to be a broken record, but as I get new information from time to time I will send you a GMO Update. Such is the case today.
My information comes from the Rich Roll Podcast with Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister-Jones, the film-making couple behind a new movie on the scene about GMO, called Consumed, The Movie.
While this is a thriller with stars like Danny Glover in it, they have promised that all the GMO facts are based on actual information, research and stories shared by the experts of what is going on today with our food.
Much like myself, Rich, Daryl and Zoe understand that this is not a debate about whether or not GMO is good for you. It’s about labeling. It’s about the long term testing that predominately is not available, because the testing is being funded by the Corporations connected to GMO products. (They have done 90 day tests, which proves nothing. And that testing is self regulated. Another red flag).
The American Medical Association agrees we need long term testing to see how GMO affects our health and the environment. Now, if we take a look at some of the facts and figures that we cannot yet substantially link to GMO food, what we do know is that disease is up since the introduction of GMO food. And we are now in position of needing to fight green house gases.
Rich Rolls’ podcast explains: “Rotation of crops replanting of seed, studies that show sustainable farming is the only way to combat climate change/green house gases”.
And in terms of wondering why Monsanto would even want to grow GMO food?
“With GMO you will no longer be depending on the quality of the soil. You can grow the same thing in the same soil over and over”.
But that’s not all. We will be able to grow bigger food with genetic modification. Farmed salmon being fed genetically modified corn makes them go bigger, faster. (Another reason not to eat farmed salmon).
But are we really running out of food, or don’t we really have enough food to feed the world?
According to Zoe “…… there is enough food but the problem really is (proper) distribution and access – feeding the 3rd world with sustainable farming practices. We have enough food to fill 10 billion people right now, but much of it goes to animals”.
I remember watching the movie Cowspiracy. They clearly showed that in the same plot of land to grow one cow to feed one family, you can grow enough plants and vegetables to feed a village. So I can see how what Zoe is saying is right on target. It’s not something I haven’t heard before.
Is GMO modified food really hurting anyone?
What we do know is this: “The EWG tells us there are 3200 elementary schools within 1,000 feet of GMO pesticide sprayed crops ending up in the lungs of these kids and it’s in 60% or more of the rain in the midwest”. And that’s really why we need long term testing now!
Check out my blog coming up this weekend on GMO Labeling and Practices. There’s news on that too!
