Food Tricks

One of the things that has always amazed me is how people in the food industry seem to know Food Tricks. As a chef who traveled the world, cooking in kitchens and being trained at Michelin Star Restaurants, there are so many things I have personally picked up. For example, let’s say you over salt soup that you are cooking…. Peel a potato. Drop it in. The potato will absorb the salt. Remove and you have the soup you absolutely love.

My second trick I learned at a restaurant in Firenze. We ate dinner there and I asked to come back in the morning to help the chef prep lunch. He showed me that you can tear a baguette into a tomato soup to thicken it.  Who would have thought about that? lol

And my third tip is about onions. Have you ever seen onions turn grey? Well, heads up! The pan must be hot first, then slight turned down to caramelize those onions to a nice golden brown. You always start with a hot pan, to hear that sizzle, unless and if you are boiling pasta. Then you start with a cold pan and cold water. (It cooks faster and more evenly).

Today, I went on YouTube to see who else knows what. And I want to present to you 3 tips about peeling…. first off, there’s oranges. Apparently if you just an orange all the way around its’ middle the skin will come off like a cap. Instead, if you start peeling at the end, it will be a total fight to peel that orange.

This tip comes from Cooking Hacks on YouTube. I just snapped a picture of their video to show you want I mean.

Coring Kiwi

Next, let’s take a look at kiwi. If you cut both ends, you can go around the inside of the peel with a spoon and voila! you have Kiwi, getting the most out of the fruit!

In my humble opinion, Kiwi is one of those fruits (mango too) that if you didn’t grow up eating it you probably don’t have a taste for it. I know I don’t. But according to Healthline “It’s full of nutrients like vitamin C, vitamin K, vitamin E, folate, and potassium. They also have a lot of antioxidants and are a good source of fiber”. So now you have good reasons to eat Kiwi. When I think of getting potassium into my system, I never think of Kiwi. Do you? So there you go! Another good reason to eat Kiwi.

Moving onto our third tip…. this is a very simple tip that frankly, I had not thought of before. It’s about cutting mushrooms. You know how sometimes you go into a restaurant and order a spinach and mushroom salad? You don’t do that? lol Well, I do. And seriously I was trying to figure out how to slice them evenly.

Again, voila~ use an egg slicer. Amazing huh? And so simple! My thanks to Cooking Hacks on YouTube. I highly recommend watching!
