Apeel? What’s it all about?

Healthy Happy Eating

Apeel is a new ‘invisible spray on coating’. According to Cornacopia.org is “an extra ‘peel’ of protection made by adding another layer of what naturally exists on the fruits and veggies already.” Organipeel, an Apeel product that’s meant for organic food, is registered with the EPA as a pesticide (a fungicide, specifically). They are saying this will help fruits and vegetables last longer because it mimics the natural outside of fruits and veggies and provides and extra level of protection. Apparently this is backed by Oprah and Bill Gates and at first glance it looks good. But I personally am very wary of anything that is new because we are the first generation and actually the guinea pigs for it all.

Some of the companies on the web talk about the fact that it’s dangerous, like Deep Roots at Home. You see it on avocados and cucumbers mostly right now but there are plants for all vegetables. And it can’t be scrubbed off. The company Apeel says: “Apeel’s Edipeel is allowed for use on fruits and vegetables in the United States, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Peru, and South Africa, without restriction. Additionally, Edipeel is allowed for use on the following fruits in the European Union, Norway, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom: avocados, citrus fruit, mangoes, papayas, melons, bananas, pineapples, and pomegranates”.

Apeel admits their ingredients are glycerolipids, “specifically the food additive mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids”.

Here’s what Deep Roots says: Buyer Beware: Mono- and diglycerides contain trans-fat, which promotes inflammation in the body and has been associated with heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and obesity. I have been researching food for 3 decades now, and have been bringing you whatever I dig up. This blogs’ purpose is to call things to your attention, provide Restaurant Reviews, Recipes and allow me a space for general ranting! Never take what I say to use in place of your own good judgement. I absolutely expect you to do your own research and give me feedback if I miss the mark about something. As a former radio broadcaster and newswoman, I do get that we are given things on a ‘need to know’ basis…. and when I say that, I mean what ‘they’ think we need to know.

I would estimate that we get maybe 20% of the whole story of anything we are told. So please keep all of this in mind. This is why I am so comfortable talking about us being guinea pigs and making that my marker for whether or not I try something new, rather than finding out 10 years from now that whatever it was we ate, gives us cancer. As a blogger since 2008 I am now evolving and let me tell you how.

Four years ago, I created “No Face Goes UnFed” to end hunger in San Diego. This is after working with many non profits to provide food, skills and nutrition to people living in shelters or on peoples’ couches. It’s a terrific game plan with a domain name registered. My problem is funding it.

I am now working on a Cooking Portal called Chef Marian Kichen Confident, that gives you classes on Cooking, Nutrition and Food & Wine Pairing. This portal will help you save time, save money, and eat better. These courses (and my founding membership) will fund my ability to do great things for my community and beyond in my ‘next chapter‘, coming up the end of the year beginning of next. You can find the beginnings of Chef Marian Kitchen Confident on both Facebook and Instagram. And my Podcast is currently in development. I have lots to teach, lots to share as a world traveled and trained Chef.

Hope to see you at a class inside my portal soon,
