Food News 2018 – Wine & Beer Hybrids

Wine Magazine tells us there are new things on the horizon: Wine & Beer Hybrids.

Combining brewing and winemaking. You knew it was just a matter of time!

In an article by Jay C. Williams, he quotes a Brewmaster: “By blending two seemingly opposite worlds of beer and wine together, we’ve discovered they collide quite nicely”. Thanks Sam Calagione, founder of Dogfish Head Brewing. It seems that you are not new to this game. And I understand you push it to combine 51% grain with 49% Viognier and according to this article that’s the highest grape content a beer can legally have.

I can see how this can be…. on Memorial Day, there was a half a glass of prosecco left in a bottle, and a half a glass of a pinot noir and I combined them, then drank them just fine!

So that’s what vintners are doing…. combining the two. Zack Adams teamed up with his in-laws to produce Annata Grape Harvest Farmhouse Ale. So when you are in the store and see that or maybe Mixed Media you can say “Hmmmm…. so this is what Chef Marian was talking about”! lol

It’s quite the process to add grapes ferment, and then ferment again. Prestigious beer? I wouldn’t go that far. But I will say I do like the concept. And since Memorial Day just passed and you may have a bunch of various wines and beers, that normally will never get finished quick enough ~ I am going to suggest you have a couple of people over Friday night and do a ‘tasting’. Let everyone combine and see what you like best. That’s what it’s all about. Fun!

Now don’t get me wrong! I am not suggesting you blend a Cakebread Chardonnay with a Sculpin Beer. What I’m saying is if you have a bunch of bottles under $20 each you may want to play around blending wine with wine, wine with prosecco and wine with beer…. just for fun! And isn’t the promise we made to ourselves this year? More joy? More love? And more fun? I know I did…. so get on the bandwagon! It doesn’t have to be alcohol …. it can be creating in the kitchen, creating art on canvas, or even creating or re-creating yourself. Get to it! Bring the fun! And enjoy!
