Thought I might bring you the latest and greatest Blog. It’s about Barhopping in Bird Rock! You know that little place if you go on La jolla Boulevard and keep going through and pass La jolla?
What Restaurants did you stop into Chef?

First, we went to Paradisaea. Nice enough kid at the bar serving us. We had 6 oysters. Nice size. Not too briney.
There’s the same problem in most places serving oysters. The shuckers need help. If you eat one and are crunching shell, it wasn’t shucked well.
Your choice is a margarita or daiquiri for $10 each. Well, we know what those taste like. And that’s it. That’s all you ‘git’ for happy or not so happy hour. So please do not expect a happy hour menu. Oyster and/or one of two drinks.
My partner in crime Jan and I both skipped drinks. $18 for a glass of wine that isn’t on happy hour, and not a stellar glass screams out “Don’t do it”.
And that’s when we got the idea to bar hop! Jan says: “In all my years, I have never gone barhopping”.

We laugh. We are getting ready to be naughty, for the sake of letting you know where to go and what to eat.
Just a few doors down is Beaumont’s Eatery. I remember when it was owned by Chuck Samuelson, who went on to be one of the creators of Kitchens for Good, that we support year after year. Well, it doesn’t look the same. And of course the food is different. But as far as happy hours go, this is a very happy happy hour. I think half the battle is how happy the people are, that are working there. And then we look at the food.
I show you the open face shrimp taco, just so you can see how many ingredients and how much food is in just one taco.

Then I take a ‘glamour’ shot. Yes my friends. That is a Jumbo Shrimp! For our Taco eaters, I will say this place hits the spot!
And as we are sitting there I notice how they chill their white wine. I would say that is an owner who goes the extra mile! The perfect amount of chill!
Again, I must say it was a very enjoyable, very relaxing happy hour, with better than happy hour ingredients, surrounded by people that want to be working there. Bravo! And our bartender used to work at the next place we

go to and highly recommends it! By the way, I think this Wine Chiller is amazing if you throw big parties at home. The brand is Summit.
More food Chef?
Yes. We then wander down the block to Wheat & Water. They are known for their pizza. There are two thing I especially like: Notice on the pizza picture there’s a stick with a gold ball? Jan finally gets her margarita and I

get the stick! It’s a really nice touch!
I throw a lot of events, so I do notice the little things. And the pizza is good to0! We sit outside, grateful that the day is finally cooling off.
And then of course, we must not forget the French Fries. C’mon. It’s happy hour and all about the fried food! I promise I don’t eat this way every day, or even once a month. But we decide to do it. So we’re doing it!

What a delightful crew of people working at Wheat and Water!
Again. Two in a row with people working and acting like they really enjoy being there!
And here’s another thing.
I ate 3 oysters, 1 shrimp taco, 1 slice of pizza and 6 French Fries. Not too bad considering. And and I have to say this about the french fries… When I find French fries I like, I take them home and put them into the freezer … so if I feel like having some potatoes with my eggs or french fries with my sandwich for lunch or even french fries as a side with dinner, I have it.
Please don’t let them sit in your freezer for too long. Maybe for next week. But I just don’t need to eat it all right now.
If you agree with me, let me know. Some restaurants complain that they don’t have enough business and I feel absolutely certain that if they advertise that they will use only beef tallow, butter or either avocado or coconut oil if you ask them for it, (not taking too big of a hit for the added expense) I believe that every restaurant in San Diego (at least) will do more business immediately.
What do you think? Am I right?
With garlic, gusto and gratitude,
Chef Marian🥂
