Why now is the time to support Plastic-Beach.com in San Diego

A bottlenose dolphin washes up on a San Diego beach. Inside her stomach: shattered bottle caps, broken fishing crate fragments, hard plastic rings from six-packs. Her body couldn’t process it. She had no way of knowing the difference between food and the trash we left behind.

Chef Marian reaching out to you

This is not a metaphor. This is a report. This is happening now.

Hard plastics — water bottles, takeout containers, bottle caps, straws, broken crates — don’t biodegrade. They break into smaller and smaller pieces called microplastics, which sink into the water column, get absorbed by plankton, eaten by fish, eaten by larger fish, and eventually land on your dinner plate. Scientists have now found microplastics in human blood, lung tissue, and breast milk.

We didn’t mean to do this. But we did it.

Which means we have to fix it.

Matthew and his crew of five at Plastic-Beach.com in San Diego are on the front lines — collecting hard plastics, consolidating them, and routing them directly to U.S. recyclers and manufacturers so they never reach the ocean. Not talking. Doing. On a shoestring. With grit.

I’ve raised money for battered women. For child trafficking survivors. For the Food Bank. For Kitchens for Good. I rarely ask for your connections. I am asking today.

FOR SMALL BUSINESSES

A 6-month pilot — zero cost, zero commitment

Starting June 1, 2026, Plastic Beach is running a free pilot from San Diego to Los Angeles. They provide the bins, handle all pickups, manage processing — and you get real data on your own plastic diversion. When the pilot ends, they collect the bins. You’re done. No strings. No invoice.

Know someone who owns a small business? Forward this. That one introduction could keep thousands of pounds of hard plastic out of our ocean.

FOR LARGE COMPANIES

None of us can stand alone and move something this big. What I know — from decades of feeding people, housing women, and building things from scratch — is that every single thing that ever got better started with one person deciding to give a damn.

You’re already that person. Now let’s go.

With garlic, gusto & gratitude,
