Today I would like to share my favorite restaurant by bringing you Restaurant Review of True Food Kitchen, UTC Mall. Some places just really know how to do it right!
True Food. They were always at the Mall off Friars Road. But now we have one right here at the UTC Mall. I know there’s construction going on right now, but if you take the 805 and get off at La Jolla Village Road you will avoid all that. And the mall has added tons of new parking structures in the back near Nordstrom’s. And while you have to use a ticket they give you, the parking is free when you insert it and go to leave. So you can’t go wrong.
By the way, if you check this blog, I go back years with different reviews for the Friars Road location talking about how Dr. Andrew Weil is one of the owners…. all good, all consistently good. So I am safe to say this review and commitment to the latest location of True Food is long overdue.
True Food – UTC Mall: The atmosphere is playful! It’s a fun feel good experience.
There’s nothing better than finding a place to eat before or after the movies where the food is not processed. I don’t know about you, but I’m getting pretty tired of going into a place knowing they are a large chain where the online cooks (minimally trained – not Chefs) are sort of “orchestrating” the meals (and if they are in the mood for spicy, you get spicy even if it’s not that way on the menu).
Know what I mean Jelly Bean?
But more than that, I’m tired of unhealthy options.
To see that is produce is fresh and locally sourced, that a room full of chefs and sous chefs are working their tails off to get it just right for you, that your waitress actually cares to make sure right away that everything is to your satisfaction, well…. you don’t get that kind of personal service at every restaurant.
I can’t remember the last time I dedicated an entire blog to one restaurant in San Diego but this is a real find and I’m so grateful to have them join us at the UTC Mall.
Go in and tell Jeremy (he’s the very cool Manager usually on duty) that Chef Marian sent you in for a free appetizer just to try them out. (1 per table until May 30th). The nice thing about their menu is they do both plant based and not plant based meals. It’s inclusive not exclusive! ha! Go on. Just check ’em out!

I personally recommend and crave Gracias Madre. And just like True Food, I do everything I can to let people know it’s a real ‘find’. Down here, we have Cafe Gratitude. So different. Ours down here is a real ‘wanna be’. (Sorry, but it’s the truth). Gracias Madre (Melrose closer to Robertson) has just amazing, amazing food, atmosphere and ‘wait’ staff. It’s the bomb!
That’s it for now.
