Reform our nation’s broken toxic chemicals policy! From Chef Marian

Bringing you a letter I received from Ken Cook. I think the message is worth repeating.

Happy Eating,

Chef Marian

A new bill has been introduced in Congress to “reform” our nation’s broken toxic chemicals policy.

But the word reform means improvement. This bill is no stronger than the feeble law now on the books. And some aspects of it are weaker.

Your senator – Sen. Barbara Boxer – is the chair of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, the committee that will oversee this bill. She needs to hear that her constituents – you! – want a real reform bill.

I hope you will take just a minute and tell Sen. Boxer you want a bill that protects consumers from the daily onslaught of chemicals that are polluting our bodies and our planet. The so-called “reform” bill is unacceptable.

Click here to tell Sen. Boxer that we need her leadership now more than ever. Let her know that you want real reform.

Toxic chemicals are everywhere. Not long ago, the Environmental Working Group’s research detected 287 chemicals in the umbilical cord blood of newborns. Of those, 180 are known to cause cancer in humans or animals, 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous system, and 208 cause birth defects or abnormal development in animal tests.

Every day, millions of Americans are needlessly exposed to untested and unregulated chemicals. Toxic chemicals show up in our bodies and the bodies of newborn babies. The fact is, industrial chemical pollution begins in the womb.

Americans deserve nothing less than a robust regulatory system that ensures that before they go on the market, chemicals won’t endanger children’s health. We need a reform bill that has some actual reforms – not this bad deal with the chemical industry. Please take a minute to tell Sen. Boxer that, as always, we’re counting on her leadership to fight for real reform and to reject this unacceptable bill.

Click here to tell Sen. Boxer that you want her to fight for real chemical reform.

Thank you for taking action. Together, we can fight for real reform.

Sincerely,

Ken Cook
President, Environmental Working Group
