Have we gotten to that? Really? That Cricket
Bars will start showing up on planes?
That’s the word from NewHope360. They claim that “JetBlue recently announced a partnership with AccelFoods, an incubator for startup natural food companies, to provide snack boxes for hungry travelers on select flights. Included in the boxes will be …. EXO—makers of cricket-containing protein bars”.
And what’s it all about? That we are stooping to Cricket Bars?
WHAT CHEF?
It’s about reducing greenhouse emissions. And I wonder if anyone hasn’t read the reports that show greenhouse emissions from cows farting are four times worse than cars and other polluters? I wonder if anyone has looked into the fact that if we are stuck and need to feed more people, we have a very easy fix on our hands. It’s called ‘stop eating cow and chicken’. Think about it. The space it takes to house a cow, that might feed a family is space that if we grew plants and trees to harvest veggies and fruits, could feed an entire village? If we needed less land to feed people, we could re-grow our trees. Makes sense?
YES CHEF!
We heard about the United Nations releasing a report last year that said: “Eating bugs could reduce greenhouse emissions, increase food security and better global livelihoods. “It’s widely accepted that by 2050 the world will host 9 billion people. To accomodate this number, current food production will need to almost double… Insects as food and feed emerge as an especially relevant issue in the twenty-first century… Thus, alternative solutions to conventional livestock and feed sources urgently need to be found,” explains the study”.
Well, I think we’re all saying the same thing. Except instead of screwing up the eco system, don’t you think that if all of us cut down on meat, chicken, turkey and pig, and spent our weekdays as vegetarians or vegans (saving those cravings for the weekend), we would reduce that footprint?
I mean, everyone questions ‘what can one person do’? After seeing a movie called Cowspiracy, I now believe that each of us can have impact by changing our lifestyle. Have you seen Bill Clinton lately? He’s vegan. He’s never looked better and says he’s never felt better.
And that’s where I’m headed too, my friend. One day at a time…. trying my best to ease away from the things hurting my body, and hurting the planet. I am sure it’s not going to be easy. Absolutely sure I will have to re-orient how I think, especially as a chef. I am sure I will loose clients, but probably pick up new ones. Or not. Either way, I’m headed to a healthier place for both myself and the planet.
In terms of eating bugs…. ? Get off the island!
Happy Eating,
Chef Marian
