Food Warnings + The Dirty Dozen

Recently, we have seen a bunch of Food Warnings. I am going to clue you in on what I know plus give you details about the Dirty Dozen for this past year.

Let’s start with Food Warnings that you can do something about right now. For example, last week they were saying that all Romaine Lettuce with packaging that says Salinas (remember, this is the same area they found e.coli in last year) should be thrown away. E.Coli again! Same place?

There’s also a few other recalls you may not have heard about but are being talked about in places like William Sonoma:

“Hodgson Mill and United Natural Foods issued voluntary recalls Wednesday for five-pound bags of their all-purpose flour products. This recall was issued after random routine sample testing by the FDA led to the discovery of E.coli in both products.

E.coli is a type of bacteria that can be found in food, the environment and our intestines. Most types of this bacteria are harmless, but some strains can cause diarrhea, urinary tract infections, pneumonia and more. Symptoms can last up to a week but can grow more severe for children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems”.

I went into Whole Foods before Thanksgiving. They still had some Romaine on their shelves, claiming it wasn’t from Salinas. Ok. That’s fine. But I’m still not buying it, until they tell me Romaine is safe again! You just can’t take a chance these days. So that’s on my mind.

The second and probably not as urgent thing on my mind today is: What do I eat?

The Dirty Dozen

Do I stick to only organic to make sure my food is safe? Or do I stop at a local restaurant, to pick up from a ‘to go’ salad for lunch, with healthy spinach salad and just accept that it’s a non-organic meal?

I mean, I know for sure I won’t be eating anything from the Dirty Dozen…. veggies that have such thin skins that it’s recommended you go organic on these because the pesticide residuals are ridiculous …. but what about a regular spinach salad?

It’s a real dilemma. Eat fast food like a Beyond Beef Burger from Carl’s Jr, with only half the bun, no mayo, no special sauce, no cheese or pick up a salad with pesticides?

Did you know that places like Native Foods serve vegetables that are not organic, in many cases? A vegan restaurant? And their produce is not completely organic?

Well I guess it what I have been talking about for years – just do the best you can!  And… I always welcome hearing what you think about all this! Thanks!

Happy Healthy Eating,
