I booked a table for two at Roy’s La Jolla Friday night. We arrived at the restaurant early, to have a quick Happy Hour.
I remember years and years ago when this restaurant needed to be updated and actually I had not been in since then. What a pleasant surprise! A great bar area and a beautiful restaurant inside!
WHAT KIND OF FOOD CHEF?
Asian Fusion. Less confusing and more flavorful than it used to be when the concept was first created!
So I figured we would have appetizers and drinks first because it was Happy Hour, and then once we were good, head into dinner for our main course and dessert. (Not a bad way to go, if someone is picking up the tab and you’re not sure what they can afford). Aaaah…. the dating world! lol I should be like everyone else and just take full advantage…. but I just can’t bring myself to do that.
YOU’RE DATING THE WRONG MEN CHEF! DATE MEN WHO CAN AFFORD TO TAKE YOU OUT!
Yes. Yes I know.
But keeping to conversation about the Happy Hour and food/drinks, we tried their Misoyaki Butterfish Lettuce Wraps and their Tempura Crusted Ahi Roll.
Two martini’s please! OMG. Shaken but not stirred with a waiter/bartender who was like a breath of fresh air. (Wish I could clone him and send him into every restaurant to train their staff)! lol
The two appetizers and everything connected to that first bite made us realize we were in for a treat, for dinner.
Pictures, anyone?
YES CHEF!
Alrighty then. Here ya go!
Their Happy Hour Sushi was so good, that when we got into the main dining room, instead of ordering entrées, we ordered Szechuan Spiced Pork Ribs and more Sushi! We were totally, totally satisfied (although the next time I will try their entrées).
Can you tell, I really liked their ribs? By the time I remembered to shoot it, there was only 1 left!
Congratulations to Executive Chef Monica Olaes, who has actually brought this location up to the same quality I have experienced in San Francisco.
It’s amazing! This restaurant is a keeper! A highly recommended stop for when someone asks: “Where do you want to eat”? (Of course, make sure it’s someone who is picking up the tab)!
Feel free to ‘like’ this page, if you haven’t been to this restaurant and then pass this review to anyone you think might thank you for it!
And if you can’t swing Dinner? You can still enjoy Roy’s not-so-typical Happy Hour. Great food.
Sure leaves me happy!
Happy Eating,
Chef Marian
