I was so blown out this week when I realized that Coconut Water is NOT what you think it is. Very, very disappointing.
One of the things I know for sure is I need to drink 8 – 12 full glasses of water every day. I also know that wine is dehydrating and Coconut Water is hydrating. And on those nights I enjoy a glass of wine, I know I need to drink more, to hydrate. So I thought I would supplement my water with Coconut Water.
Surprise. 12 grams of sugar. Yikes!
During these days, when I am eating a small amount of protein, lots of veggies and a small amount of fruit, sugar is the last thing I want!
So bummer! Bummer! Bummer!
I hate to say this, but I don’t recommend Coconut Water…. not even the 100% Raw Coconut Water from Harmless Harvest. Harmless? I think not! And for many consumers it’s not just about sugar.
Other issues with Coconut Water:
- Is it Pasturized?
- Is it only 50% juice and the rest genetically modified sugar?
- Is it a concentrate?
Coconut Water from both Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods is low on the list…… your last choice for Coconut Water. And that’s after a bunch of research and what other people are saying as well.
All in all, I want to say I am very, very disappointed. Would have been nice to drink more than just my PH Balanced Water, or Distilled Water…. and I really thought I was doing fine. Coconut Water seemed like a good choice until and if I re-read the label. We know that sugar makes you want to eat more sugar. And sugar equals inflammation.
Coconut Water that you don’t get specially squeezed from an actual Juice Bar has that hidden ingredient. Sugar. As much as 12 and 13 grams. It’s a really, really bad choice.
A funny thing… Years ago I stopped eating all sugar. And when I would have sugar, I would spit it out. Too sweet. Yech!
I haven’t had sugar in weeks now (or have I?). (I am still having a glass of wine ocassionally).
So if I’m having sugar and I know it, that’s my choice. The problem with sugar and Coconut Water? You don’t even know it. But then you are watching PBS and there’s a great cooking show (America’s Test Kitchen) and you find yourself writing down the recipe for Flan. That’s not only sugar, but milk as well (which your body does not, for the most part process because it’s pasteurized and monkey’d with). And the reason you are interested? When you eat sugar, you need more sugar.
That’s the real problem with Coconut Water.
So that’s my research for today. Chef Marian reporting back to you, as always!
