Tips for a Healthier New Year from Chef Marian

We are all making ourselves promises to have a Healthier New Year… so here are some tips I have for you. Some I’ve learned about over the years and some more recently from Dr. Oz and the reason I mention them, is that they are backed by testing, so there’s a better chance we won’t hear just the opposite 6 months from now!

Picture a plus sign on your plate. Now you’ve got four parts! One part is veggies, one part is protein (remembering your stomach is the size of your fist and a portion is the size of your palm), one part is carbs and the last portion is … you guessed it, veggies again. See your plate differently and practice portion control with very little effort. It’s the easiest way to slim down and get healthy.

Has this happened to you? Make soup. You salt. You don’t taste it. You wait a bit. You salt again… still not getting the flavor.. and eventually there’s too much salt because at one point it all catches up. How do you fix it? Drop a potato in. It will absorb all the salt… fish it out and you have your original soup. Had too much salt from food other people prepare? Parsley (10 leaves) helps you piss out salt. Can I say piss? And remember: those pounds you put on last (during the holidays) come off really easily and quickly. That’s the good news!

The whole thing about health is to lose the weight that’s clogging your arteries. But we can take natural supplements like 1000 ml of calcium pyruvate before meals. It is a substance that naturally occurs in the body. Calcium Pyruvate is the key to how the body burns sugar and starch. And I’ve never heard about this before but Dr. Oz says Gamma-linolenic acid makes fat cells release fat. According to stats, Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) is an omega-6 fatty acid that is found mostly in plant based oils such as borrage seed oil, evening primrose oil, and black currant seed oil. Omega-6 fatty acids are considered essential fatty acids: They are necessary for human health. Cool. I’ll try that! Dosage is 800 ml if you take it in pill form.

Cholesterol? Sprinkle fresh oregano on your food. How about trying dark cocoa sprinkled on butternut squash? It prevents blood clots. And mulled wine is truly a good thing; heated red wine (antioxidents), cinnamon (helps with cholesterol) cloves (relaxes the heart). Olive oil – Extra virgin COLD PRESSED has a full flavor peperry element on the back of your throat and it is good for you – preventing some breast cancers. Kalamata olives, fights and prevents colon cancer.

Want more sleep? A better quality of sleep? Jujube lowers blood pressure and cortosol and helps you sleep soundly through the night. Start with 250 mg 1 hour before bedtime.

Did you know that for every degree the temperature drops, 200 more people nationwide have more heart attacks? Start your day with a shot class with half cranberry juice (unsugared) and half flaxseed oil with 4 drops of the natural sweetener Stevia. Stevia is a South American herb used as a natural sweetener for centuries. The leaves of the Stevia rebaudiana plant have a refreshing taste, zero glycemic index and no calories or carbs.

Remember: consult a doctor, or someone you trust, or do your own research. Don’t just take my opinion. Use it as an opportunity to think about things…. investigate what you want for your life.

Happy Eating,

Chef Marian
