The Plastic Bag Issue? I welcome new legislation! Don’t you?

YES CHEF!

The LA Times reports that “Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown …. plans to sign a law that would make California the first state to impose a statewide ban on single-use plastic bags”.

“I probably will sign it, yes,” Brown said during the televised debate. “ In fact, I’ll tell you why I’m going to sign it …. There are about 50 cities with their own plastic bag ban, and that’s causing a lot of confusion.’’

“California lawmakers have approved legislation banning plastic bags, such as those available to customers in supermarkets, convenience stores and pharmacies. Supporters argued the ban would reduce litter on beaches and streets as well as garbage being dumped at landfills”.

How that translates to you? You will be charged ten cents for bags going forward, to dissuade you from doing that. They’re hoping that we’re all so cheap, that rather than be charged for a bag, we’ll bring our own. You would think they would also have signs that talk about why there are no bags…. and how that’s going to impact our world. But nooooo…. that would be too easy, make too much sense.

Of course bag makers are opposing the bill and some of our Republication lawmakers are saying it has government stepping in where it doesn’t belong. But I think most of us think: Less Plastic, Less Paper is a good thing!

Well, since you’re not going to get it at the stores, there probably is not going to be any explanation as to ‘what happened that we’re paying for bags’ at least you’re getting it here now. The ban will start at grocery stores and pharmacies July 1, 2015. Later convenience stores and liquor stores will be charging for bags as well.

Aren’t you required by law to carry alcohol in a brown paper bag? More questions…. more questions….

It pays that many, many years ago I used to be a radio newscaster. Right?

RIGHT CHEF!

Happy Eating,
