Yesterday at The Fair

What did you do today? Did you come see Chef Marian On Stage at the Del Mar Fairgrounds?

NO CHEF!

Shame on you! lol

And a special thanks to those new people plus my regulars who attended yesterday’s class.

Here’s the good news: you’ll have another chance next Thursday at 2pm. Hope to see you there!

I WILL CHEF!

lol…. well alrighty then. I would like to tell you every tip I told, but ya know I’m in the process of cutting up the video and posting it. So let’s just say “I’ll let you know when the videos are up on YouTube”…. ok? And that’s especially important for seeing how I cut carrots into flowers!

YES CHEF!

There were 3 things I taught today without all the tips (included later) are:

  1. How to make great salad without dressing
  2. What the value of vegetables and fruits are to your body
  3. How to make a great soup
  4. How to turn carrots into flowers

Soup is something I make regularly. There are more than a half dozen blogs on here about soup. Just type soup, in the top right search area on this site, and you’ll have way more info about soup, including suggestions and recipes!

What we think is great salad, is great salad. If you tell yourself why certain vegetables are ‘good medicine’ you are much more likely to enjoy them.

Did you know the color yellow is good for digestion? Banana’s, lemons, etc.

And what about green? Broccoli, kale, etc. Most people said they prevent cancer. But there’s another Big C. A preventative Big C. Cleansing. They’re cleansing your body.

The most important part of my on stage yesterday connected to salad is how I dressed it. Simply with lemon. Lemon bumps all the flavors up…. helps you really taste the veggies. And guess what? The audience came up after, asking for more salad. There was a 20 something in the audience that was intensely wondering about everything I had talked about. And that’s the reason I do these personal appearances. My goal is to answer questions that create more questions and interest in making smarter choices for your body. And every ‘body’ is different. So there’s no 1 answer. You have to see what works for you (and of course consult a doctor or a holistic practicioner before taking my or anyone’s advise)!

We talked about diets. You go on a diet? You go off a diet. And you usually gain back more than you lost. That’s what happened to me last year. A friend asked me to try her plan …. It was a crazy, crazy plan that had me eating as late as 10pm at night…. and we all know how wrong that is. I did drop some weight, but after the diet? When it got too difficult to stay on it? I gained back what I lost and then some.

My suggestion is to do one of two things to get healthier (and please, let’s not even look at a scale. Let’s judge by how our clothes fit): In ‘baby’ steps, maybe one a week, add new vegetables to your diet. Or, if you want to start clean, eat vegetables in abundance and add small amounts of protein to at least two meals, plus small amounts of fruits, and then add back in each thing you crave for a week, and see how it affects your body. Does it make you tired, sluggish? Do you feel fatter or are people saying you look thinner…?

The one thing I do recommend is that you take a handful of nuts before you eat or drink anything that is fruit … or sugar for that matter. Instead of spiking your glycemic index and causing inflammation in your body, a couple of bites of any protein will marginalize that.

And since we know that veggies are alkaline and disease can’t grow in an alkaline body, either of those plans will boost your ability to stay disease free.

Hope to see you next Thursday at 2pm at The Fair, when both Vegan Pastry Chef Liz Gary and I will feature a local Soy Factory, and create Lasagna and Chocolate Pudding with a twist!

Happy Eating,
